16 Reasons why the MacBook sucks
by elbertc
I agree the MacBook sucks. I have my own gripes about it, and I hope Johnny Ive is listening.
First, it’s white. Why the hell did they choose this color? They should’ve gone beige, or red even.
Second, the white plastic is too shiny. Why didn’t they just use the same grainy plastic finish found in most computers? Also, what’s with this bulletproof material business? What, do they want me to get shot?
Third, what’s with this two-finger trackpad business? It’s ridiculous! Why couldn’t Apple just place simple scroll wheels on the right and bottom of the trackpad? We’re all used too that and they’re more obvious anyway. Why didn’t they place an extra button for right click? Why do I have to be forced to use an extra finger for scrolling and right clicking? I want my other finger free!
Fourth, it sucks that the OS boots up in about 20 seconds. This means I can’t even go get a cup of coffee while my system boots up. It’s just too short!
Fifth, even worse is this sleep mode. It’s so fast it’s like nothing happened. I mean, I want to see a progress bar that tells me all my work is being preserved. Also, this stupid sleep doesn’t allow me to remove my battery, I want to be able to remove my battery without having to shut down.
Sixth, trashing applications is just way too simple. I was told just to drag unwanted applications into he trash and then empty it. Why can’t these apps have .dll files scattered all over the place? That way, Apple can throw in an uninstaller utility that does its best to look for all of those .dll’s and delete them for me. It’s way too simple, really.
Seventh, it’s too slim. In fact it’s also too wide. Wy can’t Apple just follow the standards and come up with a 4:3 screen? Now I have black bars to the left and right of my old TV shows. That really sucks. What a waste of space.
Eight, who the hell decided to allow me the flexibility of connecting to different types of displays? VGA is the way to go. All this digital business is nonsense. Who can tell the difference anyway?
Ninth, there’s no modem! What, now I’m forced to use a broadband connection? How dare they!
Tenth, why couldn’t apple just place a simple battery release? Don’t they know that we users frequently remove our batteries? I have to use a coin? Why couldn’t it be a simple latch? I don’t care if that latch can accidentally get caught when slipping the computer in and out of a bag. the risk of the battery popping out accidentally is mine. Geez, now I have to keep a P1 coin with me always.
Eleventh, what, no bag? Now I have to buy one? Toshiba, IBM and the rest, they all throw in a standard black bag, why should Apple be the exception?
Twelfth, there are too many accessories for the Mac. It’s all a scam. wrist rugs, trackpad protectors (this one is the most useless of all), keyboard covers, coolpads, I really miss my PC days where our laptops had no accessories at all.
Thirteenth, no viruses? Where’s the fun in that? I want the risk! I want the anti-virus software! That’s my choice!
Fourteenth, no maintenance. That sucks, I like defragging, it’s become a pastime!
Fifteenth, this drag and drop business has gone out of hand. I just want copy and paste. It’s just so silly that I can drag a file straight into the Mail icon in the dock, or even in the applications folder, to create a message with an attachment. I want my routine: open Mail, create new message, click on attach file, locate file and attach. Drag and drop? too simple!
Sixteenth and seventeenth, the magsafe and sudden motion sensor features are just plain stupid. Who the hell trips over laptop cables? Who the hell drops their computers?
Lastly, for the same price, I can get a Dell Inspiron. At least the Inspiron does away with all those stupid extra features I don’t need and comes in the form factor I’m looking for.
Sorry to nitpick and be so negative, I guess the Mac isn’t for everyone.

Cute, very Cute. I switched about 3 years ago, and man am I happy I did. I used to have to download updates and drivers for hardware almost weekly. Now with the mac, it’s just one unified update, usually once every couple of months. Viruses, I don’t even worry about them any more.
The worst thing about my experience switching to a Mac was trying to unlearn all that I had learned over the years about Windows. I actually got a bit frustrated at times, until I tried what should’ve been the intuitive way to do things, and low and behold, It Worked.
Signed,
One majorly happy Mac user.

Sounds like the whole world of computing has come of age, because I’m having most of the same problems with my Inspiron 1720 running Vista Business. No virus or maintenance issues, graphics are outstanding, everything just works. And that modem is pretty handy for sending the occassional fax.
My package is a 17″ model with Core2Duo@2.0GHz, 3GB RAM, 160GB, wireless-N and bluetooth, 5 USB ports, mini firewire, DVD/RW, Memory Stick, PC Card slot, headphone/mic ports, broadband support, Logitech BT mouse and Belkin bag delivered to my door for $720. Oh, and room for a second hard drive.
And I have that same problem with mail attachments, where I just drag the file I want to attach to a new message onto the Outlook icon and yowzah! there it is: new message with attachment in place. Been doing that since . . . forever? Having Office 2007 Enterprise Edition is pretty special as is CS3 and Nero8, but you know wht they say . . . special apps for special people. Hope that iLife thing goes well for you!

Woah, did I say $720? Just picked up the same configuration today for $640. Sweet.
You just keep repeating that ol’ “jeepers, they cost the same, especially when you factor in the eBay resale value! [but I give my outdated systems to my cousins so who really knows for sure?]” line (the one all disingenuous Macophiles parrot) and the little pixies that live in the forest might just make it so.
Same price my arse ;-)

your gripes are petty. you should hear my issues that i have had with dell. your mac and my dell were soldiers of war, you would have a paper cut and my dell would have been limbless, sightless, full of shrapnell and abandoned. Go on, by a dell, it would give you something actually worth complaining about.

so, you want things complicated why did you get a mac in first place?, people who want slow things and complicated should get a pc oh yeah and also geeks , obviously not mac users,

They are nice features. But do they WARRANT THE HUGE PRICE TAG? Most mac users will furiously nod in agreement. Most PC (Viao, Dell, Toshiba, etc.. etc..) users will say no. But in the end, Mac doesn’t suck, and most new laptops from the top PC companies don’t suck either. I think they are just built for different users. If you want to pay a pretty penny for some cool features, go ahead. The Macbook is nice, thin, has cool os features etc.. but If you don’t care about ‘looking cool’ with your laptop and having the nifty little features and want to save money, youll probably buy a Dell/other PC like most people do.

For those that aren’t stuck-up and sarcastic, here are several REAL reasons why the MacBook sucks:
1. Shared graphic memory. Compared to a computer with a dedicated graphics card, performance is severely degraded in graphics-intensive applications.
2. Palm rests become discolored after about 6 months of use; they turn a pinkish color.
3. Only 2 USB ports. Same as my Windows 2000 laptop, less than the 4 that usually come standard these days.
4. No flash card reader. You want to read SD, MMC and Compact Flash cards? you’ll have to buy an external reader for another $60.
5. Computer gets very, very hot if you’re using it for anything else other than documents, email and internet.
For all the Mac fanatics out there: I own this laptop, fourth Macintosh I’ve owned. Don’t you DARE try and label me a Microsoft fanboy, considering what rabid Apple fanboys you all are.
And, yes everyone, this guy is joking about the “problems”, or should I say “features that don’t exist”

Why does everyone equate PC = Windows. You know what else goes on a PC. LINUX. For FREE!! And I can DUAL BOOT to have Windows TO!! OMGZ that means I can get a WAYYYYY better laptop that has a kickass OS for cheaper?! OMG.
I will admit it is a beautiful laptop. And the motion sensor, touchpad, and magsafe are all really great. Heck I have often been tempted by it’s beauty to buy one of those bad boys. But, when it comes down to it. I can’t sacrifice specs and money for sexy. It won’t help me laid; so there is no point in forking over $700 more then I need to. I’d rather spend $1400 and get something that would run circles around your macbook.
Oh if you want no viruses then you want LINUX not a Mac. Sorry to break it to you; there are a lot of viruses written for macs. None for Linux. (Ubuntu looks better then OSX)

@Mitch - PC = Windows because 99.99% of PCs run windows.. Linux isnt ready for mainstream.. ubuntu doesnt even work on most dell laptops because no linux driver exists for broadcomm chipsets.. Ive used linux on and off for years now and have developed on it but its not a valid choice for the mainstream yet.
